Style Versus Comfort

Footwear of the 21st century has been enhanced and expanded dramatically since the first ever pair of shoes back in 8000 BC. With the main intention of protecting our feet from the harm of the earth's surface, the earliest invention met the basic criteria.
Thousands of years on, humans are more intelligent and have greater technologies and machinery which leads us to a massive variety to feast our eyes upon. With hundreds of colours and textures to suit our personal taste, it is like being let loose in a sweet shop. We now have available multiple practical styles such as trainers for athletic activities, steel toe boots for construction work and Wellington boots for wet and muddy weather. Although these designs are purpose-built and practically life savers, there are some styles that make us wonder if the comfort and purpose is not always the first thing on the manufacturers mind.

Designers want to be noticed for their creations, so there is no surprise that they try to branch out to create the most bespoke pieces in a bid to convey their personal label. Fashion designers are creative individuals who express their imagination through their garments; it is usually the crazier, the better. They are in competition with other designers which results in a fashion battle for the most amazing, unique pieces. A previous catwalk show from Hong Kong's fashion week sported all kinds of outrageous designer footwear; with styles featuring three heels, a diamond encrusted decorative egg heel and a shoe made to look like an actual boat.

When choosing these wacky designs it makes us curious as to whether they have taken into consideration the comfort and wellbeing of the wearer of the shoes or are they just another fashion accessory? Presentation is an important aspect to the popularity of anything as it is the first thing our eyes see; it could be anything from a magazine cover to packaging to a cooked meal. For a human to physically walk in a pair of these mad designer heels, it would be a tough task, but as long as they look stylish it seems many people would deal with the discomfort.

Although some of the footwear that is achieved by designers of today can be beautifully created with intricate detailing, the comfort and quality is not necessarily the best. Investing in a pair of outrageously designed shoes may look interesting and help you to get noticed, but will it be worth putting fashion before your personal health?
