Clothing Through the Decades

Clothes are one of the most important things to own and are an essential in everyday life. An interesting thing to look at is how much clothing has changed over the years. It is not just pieces of material to cover you up, but a way of making a statement about yourself.
In the 21st century from decade to decade things have changed dramatically. Taking a look at different time periods and seeing where parts of today's modern fashion derived from is very interesting and may surprise you. I am going to look at three of the major points through the 1900's where men's fashion revolutionised and then at the current and forthcoming trends of today.

1920's:
Men's fashion in the 1920's was not as daring as the females which drastically took a rebellious change
• Trousers came in at the ankles to cover them up more and to keep them in place.
• The Fedora hat came massively into fashion to really show off how dashing a gentleman could be.
• With the famous gangsters all becoming popular in the 1920's the popularity of pin stripe suits rose too. They are still around today and worn by many, although the stripes have become more subtle.

1950's
After people had recovered from the depression in the 30's, World War Two had come around in the 40's. This made the next major change to fashion occur in the 1950's.
• This decade brought around the teenage rebellion
• All of the men's clothing became very tight including their jeans and shirts.
• They wore loafer type shoes with leather jackets
• This look was inspired by a famous actor of the time in a film he had recently appeared in.

1980's
The 1980's brought about a whole new range of styles including bold hairdo's!
• One style was inspired by a working business look. Shoulder pads and suits were the must have items at work.
• The other famous look was inspired by exercise, tight leggings and bright colours which created crazy designs adopted by both men and women

2010's
This brings us right up to the current decade today! We are only a few years into it so far, so it is inevitable that we have many more styles and fashion trends to come. Some of the men's trends that look to be popular this year include:
• Double breasted tailoring
• Coloured knitwear
• Tapered trousers

And looking towards next year this will include:
• Scarves
• Leather boots
• Patterns and embroidery to provide fine details

Overall you can see how some of today's looks have been inspired or copied from decades ago, but with a new modern twist to them. For example the coloured knitwear which could be 40's inspired or the tapered trousers coming in from the 20's! Clothing will forever keep evolving and styles will change but having style itself will never alter. You will always exude your very own sense of fashion and style no matter what you wear.
