It seems everyone is jumping on the bandwagon today's designers. And why not? The fashion industry is sexy - fashion shows, parties, celebrities, recognition, and even fame to go along with a career in fashion.

Now herein lies the question: do you go to design school or directly to start a business? Not all fashion designers go the traditional route to the school of design, rather than drawing on the spirit of entrepreneurship, some "designer" turns his head to the business into a growing fashion company.

Ralph Lauren is an example of a fashion designer who bypassed the sewing machine and went straight to the market. Which path you take depends on your personal motivation. If you love sewing and pattern making, the traditional route will bring the most satisfaction. If you love fashion but do not have the patience for needle and thread, a career in a fast and exciting fashion business is still possible ... to read.

So you want to go out on your own, what first?

You've always admired fashion designers and their ability to design seasons trendy, unique and wearable fashion for the season, as if by magic. But it's not magic, but a business. And to succeed in business, there is not an island (which means that everyone needs a little help to achieve his dream). And that's not all glitz and glamor. Being a fashion designer means you should really run a business.

Before you print business cards, ask yourself if you're ready to roll up your sleeves and deal with those aspects that are not so pleasant fashion.

At first, running a fashion business can mean fulfilling the command itself (ie, packing boxes until late morning), steaming clothes over and over again during the fashion show, and bookkeeping. You could spend only a fraction of the time you actually designing, but your network, seduce and negotiate with suppliers and vendors.

If you plan to take the path directly to the consumer, you have to create a website and maintain it (and most likely have to pay someone to handle the tasks), obtain a merchant account to process credit card transactions and manage the charging cycle again. If you are not interested in learning what things mean, then you can decide to work for a big fashion house to learn the ropes.

But if you have a friend who is quite the endurance and skill or service you can trade for, you can go out on your own and succeed. Today is the age of entrepreneurship, why do not you get a piece of cake?


The biz fashion: a reality check

This exciting industry full of competition, some of which will fade and others that will give you a run for your money. You have to compete with the big names out there and trendy designers who came fresh out of school the best design or veteran big fashion houses-not to mention all the celebrities come up with their own label.

Running your own fashion biz may require you to reach potential customers and suppliers around the world, which means you should be organized. Are you ready to coordinate the procurement of raw materials such as fabric, trim and hardware, so the manufacturers you get what they need at the right moment to deliver the finished product on time limits?

Think of yourself as a business person first and second fashion designer. If you fail the fashion business, you're the one who suffers. Always keep the aspects of business in the forefront of your mind. Some people find this prospect exciting, while others can not think of anything more horrible. Still interested in starting your own fashion business?

I'm not a designer, if I was still working in the fashion industry?

Yes ... and no. If you have a vision of design, you can pay someone to take your idea and turn it into a real pattern or design. This is sort of like what a creative director does. If this fits your situation, then you should have the meat business to get your business off the ground and you should have a solid core Value Proposition.

Does this mean that you must have a solid business proposal and offer a valuable product and demand. That does not mean you have to sell high-end couture clothing to rich people. Clothiers H & M and Zara quickly focus on the ready-made fashion at affordable pricepoints.

There is more than one way to become a fashion designer. You can learn to sew and went to design school to learn the ins-and-outs of the business. But not all people learn to draw a pattern and sewing clothes together. The key to success in the fashion business is creativity, good business sense and determination.
